All those who like gardening know the old farmer’s rule for the Ice Saints and the “Cold Sophie”: From mid-May, the weather is usually so stable that no more frosts are to be expected, then all plants are allowed outdoors.
At the beginning of May, it is best to protect your plants from night frosts with fleece or foil. From mid-May, tomatoes can be planted in the bed themselves. At the start of the gardening season, you should loosen the soil and remove weeds! Then the way is clear to sow beans, chicory, carrots, parsley, radishes, pumpkin, cucumber, parsnip or peas. Also clear the last sensitive potted plants from the winter quarters. Just please don’t go into the blazing sun yet! They first have to get used to the new light and temperature conditions. Container plants that are too large should be repotted and possibly divided so that they grow well again. You can plant summer flowers directly in the bed in May and sow them to fill gaps with them. Reach for snapdragons, poppies, marigolds, delphiniums, marigolds, zinnias, jewelry baskets or a mix of field flowers.

May invites you to go on a shopping spree in the nursery. There are pre-grown plants there, all of which cut a fine figure in your bed. Plant lupine, honorary prize, thyme, peony, astilbe or Tearful Heart, and your garden will become a flower paradise! Bees will also be pleased. Here you can see what blooms in May: Flowering time May.
